Learn a language 2008
Football is an international sport and a universal language. The team spirit of players from different countries and backgrounds is a daily routine at both top clubs and smaller European teams. The knowledge of more than one language is a must for every footballer aiming for an international career, as is the ability to interact and socialise in a new country. The players and teams that best cope with this modern situation have a greater chance of success on the pitch.
Language skills do not just benefit footballers. It’s also an ability required by many people in our modern international world. There are personal advantages, but also the understanding of other languages is a big step to understanding another culture, and therefore a means against xenophobia and racism.
Football stars are idols for their fans and the campaign ”I speak football“ uses their popularity and the environment of the UEFA EURO 2008 to convince football fans of the advantages of multilingualism and motivate them to learn a language.
A series of radiospots, interviews and podcasts are available for download on this website. They are broadcast by stations all over Europe and can also be played in football grounds before matches and at half-time. The spots present a football atmosphere in a multilingual, context, with phrases and statements from football stars on languages, sports, and intercultural cooperation.
Posters and postcards with football phrases in different languages can also be dowloaded or ordered.
